How to play Youtube music in the background on a mobile device

Are you listening to music, storytelling or news on youtube and you feel to play it in the background on your mobile device while reading, texting, or doing other things. Unfortunately, unless you are a subscriber to youtube premium or youtube music, your ability to listen to the video in the background is limited. So here’s how you can do that without being a premium member of youtube.

On Android phone

  • Open Chrome browser on your phone and go to the youtube website make sure you are on the website not on the Youtube app.
  • Find the video you want to play.
  • Then tap on three dots in the up-right corner of the screen, and then select “Desktop site” from the dropdown menu.
  • Now you will be in the desktop version, then play the video.
  • Tap the home button of your mobile and the music will be stopped but no worry.
  • Pull down your notification from the top screen, you should see the notification for the current song just hit on the play button.

You can listen to music on the background same as your music player does.

On iPhone

  • Open your Safari browser and find video on youtube you like to play.
  • Tap on the “AA” symbol in the top-left corner of the screen.
  • In the drop-down menu, tap on “Request Desktop Website”
  • In the desktop version play your video and swipe up to close the Safari browser.
  • The video will probably stop playing, pull down the control center from the top right of the screen. You will see video loaded there, press button and the video should start paying again.

You can listen to music on the background same as your music player does.
